Libya’s Attorney-General has ordered the pre-trial detention of a person accused of causing debt to the Libyan state with two medical facilities in Italy for over 9 million euros.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspect – whose personal details have not been made public – have made agreements with Italian health institutions in 2017 by presenting himself as a health officer of the Libyan embassy, but the investigations revealed that the was part of the staff of the Libyan diplomatic mission in Rome and had no contract for the post as required by law.
The Attorney-General’s Office stated that the suspect caused “serious damage to the public interest” and made “profit in violation of financial laws and regulations.”
The suspect confessed to his alleged offenses “after being after being confronted with the evidence”, according to the Libyan judiciary.
