Former Algerian Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum has been proposed for the post of new UN Special Representative in Libya and head of the U.N. Support Mission in the country, Italian news agency Nova reported.
Citing unnamed Algerian sources, Nova said that the U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres presented an official proposal to the members of the Security Council to appoint the former Algerian foreign minister to hold this office.
In the same context, the Permanent Mission of the Arab League to the United Nations wrote to the Arab delegates to inform them of Guterres’ proposal, pointing out that there is great support from African countries to finally bring an African candidate to the post.
However, Libyan diplomatic sources told Nova that Boukadoum’s candidacy could be opposed by the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Russia.
