The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed concern about the “continuing crackdown on civic space and arbitrary detentions”, which it says “create a climate of fear across Libya”.
A new UN political initiative was the focus of a telephone conversation yesterday between Chairman of the High Council of State, Mohamed Takala, and UN Envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, revealed the council today.
The UN Security Council’s unanimous decision yesterday to extend the mandate of the UN Mission in Libya “demonstrates the international community’s strong support for [UN Envoy] Bathily’s efforts to further an inclusive political process leading to elections and a unified government in Libya,” said US Ambassador Richard Norland.
The Security Council is expected to vote today on renewing the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), which expires on 31 October.
The UN Security Council unanimously voted in favor of renewing sanctions on Libya and extending the mandate of the Panel of Experts of the UN Sanctions Commission for 15 months, according to the UK Mission in the UN.
The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote on a draft resolution renewing the mandate of the Panel of Experts (PoE) of the 1970 Libya Sanctions Committee and the authorization of measures contained in resolution 2146 of 19 March 2014 related to the illicit export of petroleum from Libya. The draft resolution in blue also contains several new provisions concerning the arms embargo and assets freeze measures imposed by resolution 1970 of 26 February 2011 and modified by subsequent resolutions.
