The Libyan House of Representatives’ (HoR) Foreign Affairs Committee Condemned on Saturday “the British interference in Libyan internal affairs” and said it was surprised that the statement came in the context of the British Embassy’s congratulations to the Libyan people on the country’s Independence Day.
It is noteworthy that the British Embassy in Libya said on Friday that “The UK continues to recognize the Government of National Unity as the authority tasked with leading Libya to elections and does not endorse the establishment of parallel governments or institutions.”
The Committee considered the British statement “a violation of diplomatic norms, and has caused popular discontent throughout the country.
It stressed in a statement that “the Libyan people, through the official institutions that represent them, are the decision-makers in the affairs of their country.”
HoR Committee clarified that choosing a new government or maintaining the current one is a choice for the Libyan House of Representatives, and everyone must respect the rules of democratic governance.
It welcomed working with all international partners supporting the stability of Libya, provided that “they respect the different points of view and respect the legitimate authorities in Libya.”
The Committee called on everyone to contribute to creating suitable conditions for the elections “by avoiding media escalation and provoking internal disputes and strife, at a time when the House of Representatives seeks to achieve the greatest degree of local and international consensus.”
