The head of the Women and Children’s Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, Intisar Shnib, held an extensive meeting with the head of the Planning, Finance, and General Budget Committee, Omar Tantoush; member of the Women and Children’s Affairs Committee, Fatima Al-Suwaie; and the Chief of Staff of the House of Representatives, Abdullah Al-Fudail.
The meeting discussed the Arab Guiding Strategy for Protection from Domestic Violence as a prelude to preparing a national draft law to combat violence against the family in a manner consistent with Islamic Sharia.
An agreement was also reached on the need to amend some personal status laws and establish a special family court, in addition to unifying the efforts of the Ministries of Awqaf (Endowments), Education, Social Affairs, and Information in awareness and guidance. They also discussed the reasons for the spread of violence against the family and the impact of social media, emphasizing the need to block offensive websites.
The Ministry of Interior also reviewed its efforts in protecting women and children and curbing the phenomenon of homelessness.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to form a committee from the relevant authorities to study and prepare a draft law to combat violence against the family, as well as to form a committee to review and improve legislation related to the rights of women and children. This is in addition to holding a scientific conference with the participation of experts, academics, and jurists to support the preparation of the draft law.
The meeting was also attended by the Minister of State for Women’s Affairs, Intisar Aboud; the Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Atef Al-Obeidi; the Minister of Justice, Khaled Massoud Al-Mudeer; the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Major General Faraj Qaim; and the head of the Libyan Media Corporation, Mohamed Baiyou.
The meeting was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Interior and his advisors, and the Director of the Office of the Head of the Internal Security Agency, Tariq Jadwala, in the presence of Judge Rafia Al-Obeidi, advisor at the Judicial Authority Oumayma Bawi, and the Director of the Office for Parliamentary Policy Support and Research at the House of Representatives, Abdul Wahed Al-Lafi.
