Angelo Bonelli, a member of Italy’s Chamber of Deputies, claimed that his country’s government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is complicit in the abuse and trafficking of migrants in Libya.
“As unfortunately expected, the Meloni government’s agreement with Tunisia hides serious violations of human rights, exactly as happened with the one with Libya, proponent of concentration camps with rapes and torture,” said Bonelli in a statement.
“Indeed, it is the natural continuation of that dramatic pact because the thousands of migrants stuck at sea upon departure from the Tunisian coastguards are handed over directly to Libyan traffickers,” said the Italian MP who also serves as spokesman for the Green Europe party.
“The same traffickers that Giorgia Meloni says she wants to fight, instead collaborates, because part of that river of money poured by Italy into the agreement with Tunisia ends up in the pockets of Libyan traffickers,” he said.
