An analytical report published by the Italian website “Decode 39” covered the meeting between Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and the US President’s Senior Advisor for Arab, Middle East, and Africa Affairs, Massad Boulos, confirming the two sides’ agreement on the importance of stability in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The report, followed by Al-Marsad newspaper, indicated that the meeting effectively reflects the Rome-Washington axis built on four main fronts: Libya, Gaza, Lebanon, and the Horn of Africa, noting that it was held at a crucial time ahead of the United Nations General Assembly meetings this September.
The report quoted Boulos affirming the United States’ determination to closely monitor the situation in the Mediterranean in partnership with Italy, considering the latter a distinguished interlocutor, especially with its presentation of the “Mattei Plan,” which combines economic development and security, providing a natural platform for convergence between the two countries.
The report explained that what Rome brings to the table makes it an essential partner for the United States in managing crises in the wider Mediterranean, noting that the Italians represent the architect of the framework for cooperation with Africa through the “Mattei Plan.”
The report affirmed that Rome sees the stability of North Africa and the Middle East as a matter of national and European security, while Washington considers Italy a key ally in confronting destabilizing challenges in Libya, the Sahel region, and the Horn of Africa. The report also quoted Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani affirming the strategic importance of the Libya file for European security and his support for the political roadmap of UN Envoy Hanna Tetteh.
