The Ministry of Local Governance of the Government of National Unity in Libya has started talks with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to strengthen cooperation on joint development projects.
During a meeting held today in Tripoli, relaunched by a the Minister Badr al-Din al-Toumi discussed with the IOM head of mission in Libya, Nicoletta Giordano,challenges related to migration management and ways to improve the capacity of municipalities to deal with a “very sensitive” issue in Libya, as reported by the ministry itself in a post published on Facebook.
During the meeting, Al Toumi stressed the need to address the migration dossier with a “coordinated and well-structured approach”, highlighting how it touches on different sectors and requires joint action between local institutions and international organizations.
The minister stated that “strengthening cooperation with IOM could help to dispel public concerns on an issue and improve migration management at the municipal level”.
For her part, Giordano illustrated the activities of the IOM in Libya in recent months, reiterating the importance of constant coordination with the ministry to ensure effective support for migrants and displaced persons.
The Italian representative also presented a series of initiatives aimed at promoting the stabilization of the country, such as disarmament and reintegration programs for former combatants; protection and assistance projects for migrants and displaced persons; support for municipalities to strengthen their capacity in managing migration.
Giordano explained how these interventions can “contribute to the security and development of local communities, promoting social cohesion”.
At the end of the meeting, the two parties underlined “the need to intensify communication at a technical level to study initiatives, improve cooperation and exchange knowledge and skills”.
