Libya’s wheat reserves are sufficient for more than a year, says Minister of Economy Muhammad al-Hawij, amid global concern due to the Ukrainian crisis.
In a press statement, Al-Hawij denied that the Ukrainian crisis would impact the grain market in the country because it covers only 20% of Libya’s wheat imports.
“We consume one million tons of wheat annually, and we import only 200 thousand tons from Ukraine, our stock of soft wheat is sufficient for six months, and there will be no crisis in flour.”
He noted that if the Ukrainian crisis continues, Libya has many alternatives for importing wheat, disclosing that the ministry put forward a proposal to establish a grain bureau to provide a strategic stock of wheat in the country.”
