MP: EU should urge Dbeibeh to respect rules of democracy

Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Libyan Parliament, Yousef al-Aqouri, called on the Head of the European Union delegation to Libya to urge the outgoing Prime Minister, Abdel Hamid Dbeibeh, to respect the rules of democracy and the resolution of the Parliament.

A statement issued by the Parliament said: “Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee, Yousef al-Aqouri, met via virtual technology with the Head of the European Union Mission to Libya, Jose Sabadell, where the two sides discussed a number of issues of common interest.”

Al-Aqouri stressed the importance of strengthening relations with the European Union in all fields and that this is among the priorities of the work of the Foreign Affairs Committee, reiterating the importance of communication and coordination at the level of the Parliament and the European Commission.

He continued, “The Parliament chose a new government headed by Fathi Bashagha, according to the rules of democracy, and the Parliament was keen that the new government would represent all Libyans, but Dbeibeh refused to hand over power even though his government failed to achieve its most important task, which is to organize elections, and we hope that the European Union will have a positive role in urging Dbeibeh to respect the rules of democracy and the resolution of the Parliament.”

“The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) must work in coordination with the roadmap committee chosen by the Parliament,” he added.
