Brigadier General Mohammed Al-Bakoush leads the Emergency and Crisis Management Department. He is part of the National Safety Authority. Al-Bakoush stated the Authority’s work covers land, sea, and air. Emergency members from the Support and Assistance Center carry out these operations. They responded to urgent situations in multiple areas. Qasr bin Ghashir was a primary focus. This followed heavy rainfall.
Al-Bakoush made this clear in a statement. He spoke to “Libya Al-Ahrar” channel, broadcast from Turkey. Al-Marsad newspaper also followed his remarks. Specialized teams intervened swiftly. They successfully pumped out water. They also rescued trapped individuals. He noted their numbers were not large. They were estimated to be in the dozens.
All trapped individuals were rescued. This was due to the National Safety Authority personnel. Other related rescue and emergency entities also assisted. Shelter was provided for the affected. Aid and first aid were offered. No human casualties were recorded.
Al-Bakoush added that the Derna catastrophe was immense. It had an international dimension. Yet, it offered a crucial lesson to authorities. He affirmed diligent preparations were ongoing. This focused on areas near valleys. Work continued steadily. Infrastructure also showed improvements.
He explained flooded homes were due to dilapidated infrastructure. The infrastructure was unsafe. He noted the climate is constantly changing. Readiness to face these changes varied. This varied significantly across regions.
