The National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced on Saturday the launch of the first phase of its “Think Tomorrow” campaign to plant one million trees in the areas of Al-Ussa, Jufra, and Aziziya.
The campaign is part of the “Think Tomorrow” initiative to reduce carbon emissions, which was launched by NOC Chairman Farhat Bengdara at the recent COP28 climate summit in the United Arab Emirates.
Trees to be planted in 40 locations across Libya
The statement said that the initiative aims to plant one million trees in 40 locations distributed across all regions of Libya.
The campaign targets several locations for planting types of forest seedlings that are compatible with the nature of each region to increase green spaces in areas with low tree cover, help adapt to the risks of climate change, and withstand drought and desertification factors that cause the global climate crisis.
Campaign to absorb 3 million tons of carbon
The NOC indicated that a number of parties are cooperating in the initiative, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Resources and its affiliated bodies, civil society organizations, schools, municipal councils, scout and guide troops, and security forces in the two regions.
In November, the Minister of Planning in the “Interim Government of National Unity” Mohamed Al-Zaidani said that the government had launched an initiative to plant 100 million trees, to absorb about three million tons of carbon dioxide.
