The Arabs: Two parallel roles played by Cairo and Washington to address the ongoing crisis in Libya

An analytical report published by the weekly newspaper “Al-Arab” highlighted the parallel Egyptian and American roles in supporting the United Nations’ efforts aimed at achieving unity and stability in Libya.

Joint Coordination to Support the UN Envoy
The report, followed by Al-Marsad newspaper, explained that Cairo and Washington agreed to continue coordination and consultation on supporting the role of the UN envoy to Libya, Hanna Tetteh, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the Libyan crisis that achieves consensus among the various parties and contributes to overcoming the political and security divisions the country is witnessing.

Unifying Institutions in Preparation for Elections
The report indicated that Egypt and the United States realize the importance of unifying Libyan institutions in preparation for holding legislative and presidential elections, considering it a fundamental step to meet the aspirations of the Libyan people for stability and development. The report quoted observers stressing the importance of the historical and strategic relations that link Cairo to Libya, and the ability these ties grant Egypt to influence the course of Libyan events.

Haftar Remains a Pivotal Figure in the Libyan Scene
The report showed that Cairo, by virtue of its regional relations and its communication with various Libyan parties, is capable of directing efforts towards a realistic settlement that ends division and chaos, given that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, remains one of the most prominent pivotal figures in the Libyan political and military scene.
