The European Council extends naval operation Aspides to protect navigation in the Red Sea until next February

Brussels – The European Council approved an extension today, Monday. This extends the EU’s “Aspides” maritime security operation. The operation protects freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. The extension is valid until February 28, 2027. This decision followed a strategic review of the operation. The Council published a memo on its official website.

It noted approval for 15 million Euros in funding. This funding covers shared operational costs. It spans from March 1, 2026, to February 28, 2027. The statement clarified the operation’s contribution. It helps protect commercial vessels. This addresses ongoing threats in the region. The Council affirmed the decision. It reflects the EU’s ongoing commitment to maritime security. It also shows dedication to regional stability. Furthermore, it protects global trade flows.

Operation Aspides was launched by the EU in February 2024. It provides defensive maritime security. It works to protect vessels. It also supports stability along key Red Sea maritime routes. All actions comply with international law. The operation also monitors the maritime situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
