Seoul – French President Emmanuel Macron spoke on Thursday. He stated that a military operation to forcibly open the Strait of Hormuz is unrealistic. This followed a call from US President Donald Trump. Trump had urged US allies to work towards reopening the waterway.
Macron addressed reporters during his visit to South Korea. He noted that some support liberating navigation in the Strait of Hormuz by force. This involves a military operation. He said the United States sometimes expresses this position. However, it changes from time to time.
He continued, “We have never supported this option. It is unrealistic.” He added, “It would take a long time.” “It would expose everyone passing through the Strait to risks. These include the Revolutionary Guard and ballistic missiles.”
Macron clarified his position. He has worked with European and other allies. Their goal is to build a coalition. This coalition aims to ensure freedom of passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This would happen once hostilities cease. However, he stated this can only be achieved through negotiation with Iran.
He added, “We have emphasized the need to reopen this Strait from the beginning.” “It is strategically vital for energy, fertilizer, and international trade flows.” “But this can only be done in consultation with Iran.”
Macron was asked about Trump’s criticism of NATO members. He was also asked about Trump’s threats to withdraw from the alliance. Macron replied, “I do not want to constantly comment on an operation. The Americans decided it alone with Israel.” He continued, “They can complain about not receiving assistance. But this is not our operation. We want peace as soon as possible.”
Macron also commented on Trump’s remarks. Trump had mocked Macron and his wife Brigitte. Macron described these comments as “inappropriate and unsuitable.” He said they did not fit the current moment.
