Benghazi – The Director of the National Library, Saleh Al-Shalmani, affirmed that the library’s hosting of the fourth edition of the Benghazi International Book Fair represents a pivotal moment in its cultural and historical journey. He noted that this event has breathed new life into the halls of the library, which is considered the official memory of the Libyan state.
In a statement to the Libyan News Agency, Al-Shalmani explained that the library holds thousands of rare documents, manuscripts, and books, and provides services to researchers, postgraduate students, and all those interested in science and culture.
He pointed out that the library witnessed a difficult period in the city’s history, as its surroundings were the scene of six battles during the liberation of Benghazi from terrorist groups, emphasizing that holding the exhibition in the very place where battles took place reflects the transformation of the location from a battlefield to a space for culture and books.
He added that the reopening of the library and the holding of the exhibition is a national achievement made possible by the sacrifices of the Libyan Armed Forces and the support of the General Command. He clarified that despite the damage it sustained during the war, the library still needs additional support and equipment to restore its status as a national center for preserving Libyan memory.
Al-Shalmani concluded by saying: “The National Library is not just a building, but a symbol of knowledge and identity, and a beacon shining from Benghazi to build minds with knowledge and illuminate the path to the future.”
