The United States Ambassador and Special Envoy to Libya Richard Norland affirmed his country’s support for the initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Adviser, Stephanie Williams, with regard to the Libyan elections constitutional basis.
In an exclusive statement to the Libyan News Agency, Norland confirmed that there is a lot of alignment around it, and the international community also supports this initiative, pointing out that he wants the Libyans to join in supporting this process, stating that he is optimistic that this momentum for elections will be restored as soon as possible.
Norland renewed the call for the urgent need to hold elections in Libya, saying: “We would be surprised if the elections were not organized urgently, and those who call for postponing them for a long time are mistaken. The Libyan people want elections sooner rather than later.”
On the impact of the repercussions of the war in Ukraine on the Libyan and global oil market, Norland said: “There is a general awareness that the Libyan energy sector’s contribution to the global oil market is important at this time.”
He stressed the need to ensure that Libyan oil revenues are dealt with correctly, and that these revenues go when presenting the general budget to where they should go, and a mechanism must be found to ensure this, calling on the Libyan parties and the government to adopt this mechanism.
