The Supreme Court in Tripoli has released four members of Palestinian nationality belonging to Hamas movement after eight years of detention.
The Libyan Public Prosecutor had confirmed in 2017 that the cell was responsible for smuggling weapons to Egypt, and then to Palestine, and leaking state security information.
The Public Prosecutor also revealed that the cell was present in the city of Benghazi, then moved to Tripoli, where they were arrested.
In 2018, the Tripoli Court of Appeal issued prison sentences for cell members ranging from 17 to 22 years.
The elements of the cell are:
– Marwan Abdel Qader Al-Ashqar, born in Gaza
– Nassib Muhammad Shabir, born in Tripoli
– Muayad Jamal Abed, born in Misrata
– Baraa Marwan Al-Ashqar, born in Benghazi
Sources confirm that the release of the detainees was mediated by Turkey, and they were on their way to Istanbul, after which they would head to Qatar.
