The 5+5 Joint Military Committee is facing pressure due to severe political polarization, a committee member said on Sunday.
Major General Mustafa Yahya, who represent the western region’s forces in the committee, made his remarks following yesterday’s statement by his eastern region’s counterparts who called for shutting down oil exports and halting transportation between the two region in protest against Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh.
Yahya explained that the statement of his eastern region’s counterparts does not reflect the position of the entire committee.
“I wish that members of the committee distance themselves from siding with any political party because of the direct impact thus would have on the committee’s work, its neutrality and its national role,” Yahya said.
