Tripoli – Presidential Council member Musa Al-Koni met Thursday with European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, to discuss efforts to support stability, secure borders, and address the root causes of migration.
Orlando reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Libya’s stability and the political process. He emphasized the importance European countries place on initiatives that contribute to a consensual political settlement and promote development.
The talks included Al-Koni’s vision for the current political process in Libya and explored ways to enhance cooperation with neighboring countries and strengthen border security.
The two officials also discussed the “One Desert” initiative, launched by Al-Koni and adopted by the EU. The initiative aims to support regional development projects and facilitate movement, targeting the root causes of irregular migration and reducing migrant flows northward.
Al-Koni stressed that Europe’s security is closely tied to Libya’s stability. He said that effectively addressing irregular migration requires genuine international support and the necessary human and logistical resources to strengthen border security agencies.
He added that Libya needs effective national solutions to end political divisions through broad consensus among all parties. This would ensure long-term stability and preserve national unity.
Al-Koni emphasized that Libya’s stability relies on protecting its sovereign institutions, describing them as a fundamental pillar of the state and a red line that must not be compromised.
