The burning of the headquarters of the Electoral Commission in Zawiya is a direct threat to the conduct of the electoral process at all levels, whether municipal, legislative or presidential councils, said Libyan political analyst Moatasem al-Shaari, stressing that the electoral and political scenes will be negatively affected by these outlawed acts.
al-Shaari explained in statements to Sputnik that the international community will closely monitor these developments as an obstacle to the efforts of the UN mission expected next August, noting that the Libyan citizen has lost confidence in elections in general, with a noticeable reluctance even to receive electoral cards, as a result of the repetition of the same political faces and deepening the loss of confidence in the electoral and political process as a whole.
The success of any elections in Libya requires the presence of a unified and strong military institution that controls the entire national territory under a single command, as the army is the only party capable of protecting the headquarters of the commission, ensuring the security of the electoral process and preventing any attacks.
Al-Shaari emphasised that the continued postponement of the elections exacerbates and prolongs the political crisis, pushing the country towards a dangerous slope, manifested in the deterioration of the economic, political, security and military situation, and the loss of confidence of the international community, which threatens Libya’s status and makes it vulnerable to losing its entity.
This postponement is unjustified, he said, stressing that Libya has been living for more than 14 years without a president, a constitution and no elections, which has led to a deep imbalance in the structure of the state and weakened its ability to protect its political process.
