Saleh Boumbarka issued a warning. He is the Director of Animal Resources in Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar. He stated the region’s meat crisis is worsening.
The Director spoke to the Libyan News Agency. He emphasized that animal resources are vital for Libyan food security. Roughly half of Barqa’s breeders depend on livestock. It is their main source of income.
Boumbarka explained the challenges facing animal resources. Hurricane Daniel and disease outbreaks are major issues. Feed prices have also risen continuously. These factors have negatively impacted local production.
Animal livestock numbers have plummeted. They dropped from 700,000 to 350,000 head. This caused a real crisis and a clear sheep shortage. This is the primary reason for increased meat prices. Prices were stable before Hurricane Daniel.
Boumbarka warned of two core problems for breeders. Feed prices are too high. He called for a fixed price range. This range should be between 130 and 140 dinars. Subsidized feed is also needed. Essential medicines must be secured. This requires direct cooperation. The National Center for Animal Health and specialized companies should assist. This ensures medicines are available at cost.
Feed prices have seen consecutive increases. They rose from 240 dinars in October. Prices reached 300 dinars in November. By December, they hit 400 dinars. These hikes severely threaten animal resources. They also prompt questions. Is the region moving towards frozen or unverified poultry?
Boumbarka reported significant poultry losses. Approximately 180,000 chickens died. Additionally, 22 coops were entirely affected. The National Development Agency quickly intervened. They conducted spraying and sterilization operations. This helped curb epidemic spread. It also protected the remaining poultry.
The Director warned about continued feed price increases. If prices reach 300 dinars, sacrificial animal costs will soar. Even small animals will cost between 3,000 and 5,000 dinars.
He emphasized the urgent need for intervention. Essential feed and medicines must be subsidized. This would allow the Price Stabilization Fund to set fair meat prices. This ensures market stability. It also provides comfort for citizens.
