Dbeibeh: Libyan parliament “hijacked” by MPs who want to stay in power

Monday, February 28, 2022 National 2 Mins Read
Dbeibeh wans parliamentary elections to be held in June

Incumbent Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, accused lawmakers of “hijacking” the House of Representatives and plunging Libya into “a dark tunnel” in the last years in order to stay in power.

Speaking on Sunday at a public gathering for supporting elections in Tripoli, Dbeibah said 17 February revolution aimed at development and building as well as at living, reiterating that his government and Presidential Council’s period ends in June as per the roadmap of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum and denouncing the accusations by the HoR against the executive authority of being the force majeure hindering elections.

Dbeibah said they can’t allow this “mess” and accused the HoR of getting in the way of the constitution draft that was presented in 2017 by the Constitution Drafting Assembly, thus depriving Libyans of their right to have a constitutional referendum, criticizing what he called the delayed adoption of a constitution and holding of the elections in the last ten years. He also hailed the people who took to streets in demonstrations calling for holding general elections and saying no to extension of mandates of the HoR and High Council of State.

On Monday, the HoR is going to convene and is likely to grant confidence to a new government headed and formed by Fathi Bashagha who was appointed as PM on February 10.
