German Foreign Minister, Heiko Mass, said over his arrival in Tripoli on Thursday holding elections and withdrawal of foreign fighters from Libya are important steps for implementing the conclusions of Berlin Conference II on Libya.
“We are seeing good progress in the country and want Libya to continue on that path. For this to happen elections and the withdrawal of foreign fighters are important next steps. The conclusions of the Berlin II Libya conference must be implemented,” Maas said.
Maas and the Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdel Hamid Dbeibeh, have agreed on “quickly and thoroughly” creating the right conditions for Libya elections to take place, according to German Foreign Office.
“Heiko Maas and Prime Minister Dbeibeh agree: “We must now quickly and thoroughly create the right conditions for elections to take place. The time has come for the citizens of Libya to take the fate of their country into their own hands again,” the Office quoted Mass in a tweet.
“A special item on the agenda of today’s visit will be the reopening of the German embassy in Tripoli. Germany remains a committed partner and will continue to work for peace in Libya. To this end, we are strengthening our diplomatic presence on site,” he pointed out.
Dbeibeh, on his part, tweeted: “Reopening the German embassy today in our capital, Tripoli, is a step and another positive result in our path towards stability. I was pleased with the visit of German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, and we look forward to distinguished relations between the two countries.”
