IOM delivers aid to over 800 people affected by eastern Libya flood

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Friday that it delivered “essential relief items” to 837 people affected by the massive flash floods that swept eastern parts of Libya on September 10.

IOM said the aid distribution process was conducted in collaboration with the Libyan Ministry of Social Affairs with support and assistance of US Agency for International Development and Foreign, and the UK Commonwealth and Development Office.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Libya announced, on Friday, in a report covering the period from October 10 to 17, that more than 43,421 people are still displaced inside the country, including 16,000 in Derna.

The majority of internally displaced people (94%) remain in the municipalities of eastern Libya, while 6% are in the western municipalities, according to the IOM, while based on available reports, 773 immigrants were displaced within eastern municipalities.

The report said 156,000 people were provided with humanitarian assistance, as the UN revealed that of the 231 healthcare facilities assessed, only 17 were fully operational and 168 were partially operational, while 29 hospitals had stopped working.
