Journalist criticizes Libya’s inability to produce gasoline despite being an oil-producing country
Libya – Journalist Saad Jibril Al-Obeidi criticized what he described as the catastrophic failure of the Libyan state to produce gasoline, despite being an oil-exporting country for more than six decades.
Direct Criticism
In a post on his personal Facebook page, Al-Obeidi said: “Libya has been an oil exporter for more than sixty years and has failed to produce a liter of gasoline… A catastrophic failure for a rentier, dependent, and exceptionally incompetent state.”
Background of the Crisis
Al-Obeidi’s comments come amid the country’s ongoing fuel crisis, where long lines are common at gas stations despite Libya possessing huge oil reserves and a long history as a major crude oil exporter.
