In March 2024, the EuNavFor Med – Irini operation, the European Union air-naval mission tasked with implementing the UN arms embargo in Libya, investigated 352 merchant ships via radio calls (out of 13.844 total) and carried out three visits on board ships with the consent of the commanders (603 visits carried out since the beginning of the mandate).
The operation also tracked ten suspicious flights (out of 1.388) and continued to monitor 25 airports (and landing strips) and 16 ports (and oil terminals).
This is what emerges from the monthly report of the European Irini mission (“peace” in Greek), whose headquarters are located in Rome.
After the first Berlin Conference, the Council of the European Union decided to launch, on 31 March 2020, a military operation called EuNavFor Med – Irini, mainly maritime and focused on the implementation of the United Nations arms embargo on Libya.
