The Libyan delegation, consisting of students Taha Ragas and Amr Eshkal, made a remarkable participation in the HASALMUN United Nations simulation conference, held at Nisantasi University in Istanbul, Turkey, from May 10th to 12th.
HASALMUN is considered one of the most prominent UN simulation conferences worldwide, with the current edition attracting over 400 students from 100 schools and universities representing 20 countries. The conference aims to raise awareness about the work of the United Nations and global issues, as well as develop critical thinking, discussion, and problem-solving skills among participating students.
During the conference, participants are divided into committees representing UN member states to discuss specific issues on the UN agenda, propose resolutions, and vote on them.
In this context, student Taha Ragas managed to convince members of the Economic Committee to adopt a resolution calling for promoting the fair distribution of disputed regional water resources while preserving the environment. Meanwhile, student Amr Eshkal succeeded in reaching a compromise solution in the Foreign Policy Committee to address issues of racial discrimination in South Africa.
Following the conference, the Libyan Consul in Istanbul, Salaheddeen Alkasah, welcomed the participating youth to his office to discuss the conference proceedings. He provided insights into the importance of restoring Libya’s role in foreign policy, emphasizing the significance of youth participation in such global events to enhance their capabilities in international relations and diplomacy.
The participation of the Libyan delegation was appreciated by the organizers and other participants, who commended their skills in public speaking, negotiation, and problem-solving.
