Foreign Minister in the Libyan Government, Abdul Hadi Al-Huwaij, confirmed the release of all Libyan detainees in Chad. This followed intensive communications. The calls lasted for approximately 48 hours. A call made on Thursday morning culminated in their release. The detainees have returned to their families in Al-Kufra. Al-Huwaij made this statement to Libya Al-Hadath TV. Al-Marsad newspaper followed the report.
Al-Huwaij explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs formed a crisis cell. This cell maintained continuous contact with the Chadian Foreign Minister and Security Minister. Specialized agencies and the Libyan Intelligence Service participated. He praised the role of the Armed Forces and the General Command. He also commended Prime Minister Osama Hammad. The mayor of Al-Kufra, municipal council members, and dignitaries were also acknowledged.
He pointed out that the incident does not reflect the depth and strength of Libyan-Chadian relations. It also does not represent Chad’s official position. He clarified that the measure was reciprocal. A group of Chadian nationals had been detained in Al-Kufra. This was a reaction to individual actions from both sides. He affirmed that such behavior is unacceptable. The incident has ended amicably.
The Minister stated that both sides agreed to seize this crisis as an opportunity. They aim to develop relations further. This will involve forming joint committees for bilateral work. These committees will also prevent the recurrence of such incidents. He highlighted the upcoming opening of a Chadian consulate in Benghazi. The consulate will manage community affairs. It will also enhance cooperation in economic, commercial, and other areas.
Al-Huwaij affirmed that the Chadian side acted with care and responsibility. They trusted the information provided. Chad utilized its security and military institutions. They also used border areas, especially in Oum Hadjer (Um Jaras). This facilitated a swift and organized end to the crisis. It ensured the safety of the detainees.
He emphasized support for expanding trade and economic exchange. This must occur within a framework of mutual respect. It must also preserve the human dignity of Libyan citizens. He considers Libyan-Chadian relations to be those of one people. He believes the incident resulted from actions by various parties. He concluded by confirming high-level coordination and communications. This includes the Presidency of Chad. Joint committees will be formed in the near future. Bilateral and technical meetings will also be held. Legal, administrative, and political measures are planned. These steps will prevent the recurrence of such incidents. They will also transform the crisis into an opportunity for development. This will enhance cooperation between neighboring countries.
