The Libyan government appointed by the House of Representatives has expressed dismay over recent comments made by the Sudanese representative at the United Nations Security Council.
A government statement highlighted severe human rights violations and crimes against humanity, including ethnic cleansing, being committed by all parties involved in Sudan’s internal conflict since April of the previous year. Despite this context, the Sudanese representative accused Libya and its military of supporting one faction over another.
According to the statement, the Libyan government emphasized that the Sudanese envoy ignored the crucial role played by the Libyan Armed Forces in securing the borders with Sudan and other neighboring countries. The government condemned these statements as inaccurate and baseless.
The Libyan government reiterated its stance of non-interference in the internal affairs of Sudan or any other friendly or allied nations. The statement warned all parties to refrain from involving Libya and its authorities, particularly its security and military forces, in Sudan’s internal conflict.
The government, supported by the General Command of the Libyan National Army, has taken significant measures to accommodate the unprecedented number of Sudanese refugees entering Libya. The statement detailed the establishment of specialized executive committees to provide medical and food aid and secure housing for refugees, in coordination with the armed forces and security agencies.
Despite its own crises, the Libyan government reported providing emergency medical, food, and psychological support to over 400,000 Sudanese refugees without any international or regional assistance. The statement concluded with a call for all parties in Sudan to cease hostilities, prioritize dialogue and reconciliation, and respond to mediation efforts by neighboring countries to achieve peace and enable the return of displaced persons to their homes.
