Libya’s HNEC leader hints at elections delay

Saturday, November 27, 2021 National 1 Min Read
98 candidates register for Libya’s presidential elections

The Libyan High National Elections Commission (HNEC) will determine whether it will be possible to commit to the December 24 official date for the presidential elections by the end of the appeals stage, the commission’s chairman said.

Imad Al-Sayeh told Al-Jazeera that the HNEC may request an extension after the appeals process is completed, adding that they are working in an unstable and abnormal political environment.

The HNEC has initially accepted the candidacy of 73 presidential nominees out of 98, including Khalifa Haftar and Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh. The 25 disqualified nominees, who include Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, are allowed to appeal the decision.
