Abdoulaye Bathily, the UN Special Representative for Libya, met with Mohamed al-Menfi, head of Libya’s Presidential Council, to discuss the results of the trilateral meeting hosted by Cairo that brought together al-Menfi, Mohamed Tekala of the High Council of State, and Aguila Saleh, Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The statement issued after Sunday’s Arab League-sponsored meeting stressed “the necessity of forming a unified government tasked with overseeing the electoral process and providing essential services to citizens.” It also called for “unifying sovereign positions to ensure their effective role at the Libyan state level,” in addition to unifying sovereign positions in institutions still experiencing divisions in the country.
Following his meeting with al-Menfi, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “I expressed my gratitude to President al-Menfi and took note of the official statement issued after the meeting. We agreed to follow up on the meeting’s outcomes.”
In their statement, al-Menfi, Tekala, and Saleh had called on “the UN Support Mission in Libya and the international community to support this consensus in order to ensure its success.” They also “agreed to hold a second round urgently to complete the agreement and put it into effect.”
