UN envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily participated in the meeting of the AU High-Level Panel for Libya, held in Brazzaville, chaired by President Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo, and attended by several African leaders and representatives of neighboring countries.
Bathily highlighted the role the AU plays in achieving national reconciliation in Libya based on the lessons learned from similar experiences of member states, according to UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
He also stressed the need for the active and positive participation of Libya’s neighboring countries, UNSMIL said in a statement on X.
UN envoy further underlined the continued divisions among political leaders are becoming an additional obstacle to institutional unification, adding that the political process and national reconciliation go hand in hand to achieve sustainable peace and stability in Libya, the statement pointed out.
He called on Libyan leaders to adopt a consensual approach to the reconciliation process, it added.
Bathily reiterated his appeal to the AU to establish an expert team in Libya to support the process and encouraged all regional partners to renew their support to national reconciliation in Libya, according to the statement.
