The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the announcement by the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) of the results for the 34 municipalities that participated in the second group of Municipal Council Elections, which concluded polling days on 16 and 23 August 2025.
UNSMIL also welcomed the announcement of the results for the municipality of Shwerif, which had been pending since the first group of Municipal Council Elections held in November 2024.
The UN mission extended its congratulations to the newly elected councilors, wishing them success in their new governance roles. It also commended the HNEC for its “persistence and resilience” in advancing the electoral process despite challenges.
Looking ahead, UNSMIL reiterated its call for Libyan authorities to address the obstacles that have suspended elections in other municipalities. The mission emphasized that it is essential for all citizens to be able to exercise their political rights and participate in shaping their local governance, noting that such elections are crucial for building trust and accountability between communities and their legitimate local leaders.
