U.S. Special Envoy and Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, and Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi spoke on Monday to discuss the council’s efforts to “address the tense political and security situation in Libya,” according to the U.S. Embassy in Libya.
Norland applauded the council’s “engagement with key leaders and noted the intensive discussions in Ankara, Cairo, and Libya,” the embassy said.
They agreed that “parties should avoid any step that could provoke violence”. The U.S. specifically urged the government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh to “continue engagement with Libyan institutions to pave the way for presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.”
The American diplomat also commended the council for “its work promoting national reconciliation and welcomed the role of the African Union in this regard”.
