Richard Norland, the U.S. Special Envoy and Ambassador to Libya, arrived in Tripoli today where he visited a polling station to view preparations for the general elections, according to the American embassy.
Imad al-Sayeh, chairman of Libya’s High National Election Commission (HNEC), and Daniel Rubinstein, regional director of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), accompanied Norland during his visit.
“I was impressed by voting preparations during my visit to an example polling station with Dr. Sayeh of HNEC, and IFES Regional Dir. Rubinstein,” Norland was quoted as saying by the U.S. embassy. “Technical assistance to HNEC through USAID will support free and fair elections that reflect the will of voters.”
As the polling station is in a school, I was fortunate to meet children participating in a civic education program, also sponsored by USAID,” the U.S. diplomat added. “The children represent Libya’s future; and as a parent I shared my deepest hope that their futures may be peaceful and bright.”
