Libya – Major General Abdul Hakim Al-Khaitouni, Director of the Law Enforcement Department, revealed that approximately 85 companies obtained documentary credits to import cooking oil. However, they did not release it into the markets.
He explained that some of these cases were referred to the Administrative Control Authority and the Public Prosecution for investigation. This was stated in exclusive remarks to the Qatari Al-Araby Al-Jadeed website.
Al-Khaitouni clarified that specialized agencies monitored speculative activities on the commodity. He noted that quantities of oil did not actually enter the market despite the opening of dedicated credits. He confirmed that inspection campaigns are ongoing. They are conducted through a committee formed by a decision from Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, head of the unity government.
The committee includes the Municipal Guard and the Ministry of Economy and Trade. Its mandate is to monitor market conditions. It also monitors the availability of essential goods. It aims to seize violations related to monopolization or price manipulation.
