Benghazi – Laila Al-Awjali affirmed an urgent national necessity. She is the Director of the Department for the Elderly, Seniors, and People with Disabilities at the Ministry of Social Affairs. Empowering people with Down syndrome is vital. This requires moving beyond traditional care concepts. We need more comprehensive and effective policies.
Al-Awjali made these remarks in a statement to the Libyan News Agency. Her statement was on the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day. This day is observed annually on March 21. She noted that this occasion offers a chance to re-evaluate inclusion policies. It is also an opportunity to address the ongoing challenges facing this group within society.
She explained that many countries have successfully transitioned people with Down syndrome. They moved them from a state of dependency to productive engagement. These individuals now make active contributions. However, some societies still rely on traditional care models. These models limit the development of their capabilities.
She added that merely symbolic participation in activities and celebrations is no longer sufficient. It could even become an indirect barrier to true empowerment. She stressed the need to shift towards a model based on scientific and vocational rehabilitation.
Al-Awjali emphasized the importance of opening educational and career pathways for this group. This allows for their genuine integration into the job market. They can then contribute to various sectors. She noted that investing in people is fundamental to societal progress.
She confirmed that the next phase requires launching practical national programs. These programs must provide sustainable opportunities in education and employment. They will support the transition of people with Down syndrome. These individuals will move from the margins of attention to the core of the development process.
She concluded her statements by emphasizing that support for this group must transform. It needs to shift from seasonal initiatives to a permanent institutional commitment. This commitment will enhance their presence as active partners in building society.
