Ajadabya – Al-Shahid Mohammed Al-Magrif Hospital in Ajadabya recorded a relative decrease in fireworks injuries during Eid al-Fitr. This occurred amidst continuous medical warnings about their danger. The warnings highlighted particular risks to the eyes.
Dr. Mustafa Shuaib, head of the hospital’s ophthalmology department, explained the statistics. The department received 27 injury cases on the first day of Eid. They received 17 cases on the second day. Injuries ranged from scratches and wounds of varying severity. Some cases involved bleeding in the cornea and anterior chamber.
Shuaib told the Libyan News Agency that rapid medical intervention helped control cases. It limited complications, despite the sensitivity of some injuries. He warned against using toys that rely on water and plastic projectiles. These pose a direct danger to the eye.
He attributed the decrease in injuries this year to efforts by the municipal guard. They worked to curb the spread of fireworks and pursue vendors. Increased awareness among some families also contributed.
For his part, Ibrahim Al-Oweib, director of the hospital’s media and awareness office, stated that the hospital implemented a pre-planned emergency response. This plan was active during the Eid period. It included raising readiness levels. It also ensured the availability of necessary medical resources to handle cases.
Zainab Marsal, director of medical affairs at the hospital, emphasized the issue. She confirmed that these injuries place additional pressure on emergency departments. She stressed the importance of adhering to safety procedures. Marsal also called for intensified oversight on fireworks sales.
Specialists called for strengthening community awareness campaigns. They urged stricter measures to limit the spread of these toys. This is crucial to protect citizen safety, especially children, during celebrations.
