Prime Minister-designate Fathi Bashagha blamed the government of his predecessor Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, for recent military and economic escalation in the country.
Armed convoys from the western cities of Misurata, Zintan and Zawiya entered the capital Tripoli on Saturday morning in support of Dbeibeh. This prompted military leaders from Misurata and Tripoli to urge Bashagha and Dbeibeh to prevent their political conflict from deterioration into an armed one.
Bashagha welcomed the statement of the military leaders via Twitter, reiterating his firm approach not to use force.
On the other hand, the parliament-backed premier said he holds Dbeibeh’s government responsible for “the escalation and incitement to violence.”
Commenting on recent closure of Libyan oilfields, which was driven by anti-Dbeibeh sentiments, Bashagha condemned “wasting public money and the wealth of the Libyan state in favor of an outlaw government”.
He also went on to accuse Dbeibeh’s government of seeking “to sow discord and spread chaos to continue in power”.
