The government of Prime Minister-designate, Fathi Bashagha, will assume office in Tripoli “by force of law”, the government’s media office declared in a statement on Sunday.
The government also welcomed international efforts “within the framework of a smooth handover of power” after former premier Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh refused to step down.
The United States confirmed on Saturday the two rival premiers are prepared to participate in UN-facilitated negotiations to reach settlement regarding the current political stalemate.
“The format and location of talks will be determined by the parties themselves in consultation with the UN and international partners,” the U.S. embassy in Libya said.
