The UN Special Envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, has welcomed the a meeting between the House of Representatives and High Council of State in Tunisia. However, he underscored that the outcome of these talks will not be a substitute for inclusive dialogue that includes other Libyan stakeholders.
Over 100 members of the House of Representatives and High Council of State have concluded two-day meeting in Tunisia. The lawmakers agreed on the formation of a new unity government tasked with overseeing national elections under recently passed electoral laws crafted by the joint 6+6 committee, according to a statement published by the House of Representatives.
In a letter addressed to both chambers, Bathily warned against “catastrophic consequences” if a unilateral agreement was made to establish a new government without the cooperation of other Libyan parties.
The UN diplomat underscored the need to tackle all issues that led to the failure of holding presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya in 2021 as originally outlined in the UN peace plan.
“Libya and its people have lost so much time. The more you and other parties insist on remaining in power, the closer Libyan becomes to the edger of dangerous collapse,” said Bathily.
