Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, told the Security Council on Thursday that the presence of foreign forces and mercenaries poses a threat to the peace process in the country, calling on the international community to aid his government in its effort to unify the country’s military institution.
Dbeibeh described the upcoming general elections in December as a “national and historical choice” and reviewed the steps taken by his government to support the preparations for these elections.
He also called on the Security Council to coordinate with the United Nations and the African Union to help the government and the Presidential Council launch a reconciliation campaign in the country.
The Libyan premier expressed concern over attempts made a number of European countries to exploit the Libya’s frozen assets, while calling on the U.N. to review its sanctions regime to include an amandment that would allow his government to benefit from some of it.
