Istanbul – A delegation from the Libyan House of Representatives participated in the closing session of the 152nd Assembly and the 217th session of the Governing Council. The delegation was led by First Deputy Fawzi Al-Nuwairi. It included members Dr. Sultana Al-Mismari and Dr. Rabia Abu Ras. The event took place in Istanbul, Turkey.
Al-Nuwairi presented the final report in his capacity as Chairman of the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs. He reviewed the committee’s primary discussions. These talks focused on the role of the UN Resident Coordinator. The discussions also addressed cooperation between the UN team and the Turkish government and parliament.
Several sessions focused on a proposal to amend the UN Charter. The Civil Society Coalition submitted this proposal titled “Article 109: Renewing the UN Charter.” Participants also explored ways to empower the UN against current challenges. New members were elected to the committee’s bureau during these meetings.
The Governing Council reviewed reports regarding human rights. They also discussed the activities of various committees and bodies. The Libyan parliamentary division participated in the vote to elect the Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
