Hong Kong – The US dollar held near its highest level in a week on Monday as markets reacted to mixed signals about geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The dollar remained steady against the Japanese yen at 162.50 yen. The euro was little changed at $1.1415, and the British pound was stable at $1.3434.
The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, stood at 100.96, close to its highest point since July 15. The New Zealand dollar rose 0.4 percent to $0.5860, its strongest mark since early June, after strong inflation data reinforced expectations of another interest rate hike. The Australian dollar also edged up slightly to $0.7001.
The Canadian dollar stabilized after falling to a one-month low. This drop came after the United States imposed new 50 percent tariffs on a wide range of Canadian products in response to what it called “discriminatory treatment” by Ottawa.
