Misrata – Customs officials at the Free Zone port in Misrata have foiled an attempt to smuggle more than five tons of hashish into Libya. Authorities seized two shipping containers holding 4,752 suspected blocks of hashish.
The customs office said the operation was supervised directly by the head and members of the East Misrata Primary Prosecution. The seized narcotics, locally known as “al-Qarsa,” weighed approximately 1.15 kilograms per block, making the total haul exceed 5,000 kilograms.
According to officials, the smugglers concealed and carefully packaged the drugs to evade detection. The hashish was hidden among other goods inside the containers.
Customs said the operation was supported by the Misrata Joint Operations Force, the Free Zone administration, the containers monitoring unit, and the K9 dog unit. Coordination between the participating agencies played a key role in the success of the seizure.
Authorities also arrested a Libyan national suspected of being directly involved. Legal proceedings are underway in preparation to refer the case and the suspect to the relevant public prosecutor.
