A news report has confirmed a slight decrease in irregular migrant arrivals. The number of migrants crossing the central Mediterranean has dropped by 1% so far in 2025.
The report cited data from Frontex, the EU’s border agency. It stated that total irregular entries into Europe have fallen by 25%.
Chronic instability in Libya remains a key factor on this migration route. About 90% of irregular migrants who crossed the central Mediterranean departed from Libyan territory. Frontex acknowledged the situation has not fundamentally changed compared to the same period last year.
The report noted a significant increase in departures from Libya. This rise has offset the decrease in departures from Tunisia and Algeria. Controversial cooperation with the Libyan Coast Guard has not stopped the crossings. Over 90% of irregular migrants continue to use the central Mediterranean route starting from western Libya.
The report added that challenges related to Libya persist. The Libyan-Greek route recorded a 260% increase in detections. This occurred during the first eleven months of 2025.
