A British report has highlighted a new study by Libyan researcher Hanan Al-Abbasi. The study aims to build a national composite index to measure food security in Libya. This comes amid ongoing challenges in food availability and access.

The report notes the study addresses global food insecurity. It specifically focuses on Libya’s situation between 1990 and 2022. The goal is to develop a national index that accurately reflects the country’s food security reality.

The index is not limited to measuring food availability. It uses a multi-dimensional approach. This includes economic stability, agricultural productivity, and nutritional outcomes. It provides a comprehensive view of the complexities in accessing and using food.

This approach is particularly important for Libya. It considers the country’s unique social, economic, and political conditions. These factors have affected food security for decades. Including them allows for more effective insights and policy recommendations.

The study used an innovative methodology based on rigorous statistical analysis. The index was built with quantitative indicators supported by qualitative insights. This provides a deeper understanding of Libyans’ experiences with food access.

Al-Abbasi’s study addresses historical and current challenges. These include sanctions and conflicts over the past three decades. These events directly impacted food production and distribution.

The study also stressed the need to address food safety alongside food security. The two are linked to improving public health indicators. It highlighted the role of governance and political stability in enhancing food security. This can be achieved by improving agricultural practices and ensuring fair food distribution.

A key finding was the significant impact of climate change on Libyan agriculture. This causes periods of food scarcity. The study calls for adaptive farming practices and sustainable resource management. It also discussed how poverty, unemployment, and education levels shape food security.

The report concluded by emphasizing the importance of cooperation. This includes collaboration between international organizations, local governments, and civil society. Such efforts are needed to monitor and improve food security. Sustainable investment in agriculture, infrastructure, and social programs is essential for securing food in Libya long-term.
