The Secretary-General of the United Nations has affirmed “his personal interest and commitment” to end the crisis in Libya, said Taher El-Sonni, the country’s Ambassador to the UN.
El-Sonni’s remarks came following a meeting with Antonio Guterres on Friday during which they discussed “challenges which prevented holding elections last month,” the Libyan diplomat said via Twitter.
“I stressed the need to respect the will of Libyans to determine their future with a Libyan led/owned process and withdrawal and ending of all type of foreign interventions, finding practical solutions towards a democratic path, assuring national consensus to avoid previous mistakes,” El-Sonni stated.
“We discussed how can the UN support effectively the next phase to ensure transparent/fair elections when a new road map is agreed upon,” he added.
