New York – UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed the rule of law. It is the cornerstone of global peace and security. He warned that the law of the jungle is replacing the rule of law in some parts of the world.
Guterres addressed the UN Security Council on the rule of law. He stated that flagrant violations of international law are evident. There is also a blatant disregard for the UN Charter. He noted that in areas from Gaza to Ukraine, the rule of law is treated as a selective menu of options.
Guterres added that some states violate the rule of law with impunity. This includes the illegal use of force. Civilian infrastructure is targeted. Human rights violations occur. There is illegal development of nuclear weapons. Unconstitutional changes to governments take place. Life-saving humanitarian aid is withheld.
He warned these violations establish dangerous precedents. They fuel distrust and division among states. They undermine public faith in our ability to find common solutions.
Guterres reaffirmed his commitment to relentless efforts. These efforts aim for a just and lasting peace. Such a peace addresses the root causes of conflict. It does not merely treat its symptoms.
To uphold the rule of law, Guterres urged nations to renew their commitment. They must fully respect international law. They must fulfill their promises. They must resolve disputes according to the UN Charter. They should promote the use of fair and independent judicial procedures.
